The number of fraud cases in the UK rose by 14 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2008, according to fraud prevention experts.
Cifas confirmed that there were 104,548 frauds between January and July registered on its database.
It found that bank account and credit card fraud were the main targets for criminals.
London and the south-east of England were found to be key hotspots for fraud with the East Ham postcode, E6, the most common to appear on the database.
All top ten fraud hotspots were found to fall within the boundaries of the M25.
Kate Beddington-Brown, head of communications at Cifas, said: "Being the UK's main financial centre also provides obvious incentives and, for mortgage fraud at least, the fraudster has naturally gravitated to the location that offers the richest pickings because property prices are higher than elsewhere."
Cifas recently revealed that forty-something males are the most likely age range to become victims of identity theft.
