California's Insurance Commissioner has approved the first "green" homeowners insurance policy in the state. It will be offered by fireman's fund insurance company. Standard insurance policies do not cover the extra cost of using "green" materials and appliances to rebuild homes after a loss. Commissioner Steve Poisner hopes that most other insurance companies will follow the lead of fireman's fund. "That will allow us to have a really big impact in terms of cleaning up the environment and reducing the amount of energy consumption here in the state of California," said Poizner. Fireman's fund will also pay for an environmental energy-certified architect to oversee home rebuilding.
