In her letter of July 23, Judy DeSarno objects to the term “communist” to describe Black Lives Matter and fears that to say so is being stuck in the past. If only this were so. Clearly Ms. DeSarno has not done even basic research on an organization she supports and defends.
The Black Lives Matter network was founded by Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi and Patrisse Khan-Cullors on July 13, 2013.
Cosmopolitan did an interview in 2015 with the founders of Black Lives Matter. In the interview Patrisse Cullors said that Assata Shakur was among the leaders that inspires her. According to the FBI Most Wanted Terrorist List, Joanne Chesimard (also known by her alias Assata Shakur), is wanted for escaping from prison while serving a life sentence for first degree murder of a police officer in 1977. On November 2, 1979, Chesimard escaped from prison and lived underground before being located in Cuba in 1984. She is thought to currently still be living in Cuba.
In response to the death of Castro, the Black Lives Matter Movement posted a piece in Medium titled, Lessons from Fidel: Black Lives Matter and the Transition of El Comandante.
“As a Black network committed to transformation, we are particularly grateful to Fidel for holding Mama Assata Shakur, who continues to inspire us.”
In a 2018 interview with Democracy Now, Cullors called Eric Mann her mentor. Mann was a part of the Weatherman Underground. He was arrested in 1969 and charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to attempt murder.
In 2015, Cullors did an interview with The Real News Network where she called herself, and the other founders trained Marxists. “Myself and Alicia in particular are trained organizers. We are trained Marxists. We are super versed on sort of ideological theories.”
In 2015, Opal Tometi contributed to the website Venezuela Analysis praising the Venezuelan elections. Additionally, she wrote that she rejects labeling Hugo Chavez as a dictator. “We denounce the corporate media lies about electoral corruption voiced by Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sander’s defamation of late President Hugo Chavez labeling him a dictator.”
In the published Guiding Principles of Black Lives Matter, it states, “We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable.”
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union the CPUSA (Communist Party USA) officially dissolved. Its adherents in America didn’t. They just regrouped, reorganized and rebranded. Vladimir Lenin had a term for the willfully deceived. He called them “useful idiots.”
