Fake Bank Fraud Alerts Top List of Text Message Scams
Consumers lost $330 million to fake text scams last year
New data from the Federal Trade Commission reveals that fake bank fraud warnings were the most commonly reported text message scam in 2022.
The FTC analyzed a random sample of 1,000 text messages reporting a scam to determine the top five types of text message scams from 2022. Reports of text scammers impersonating banks increased twenty-fold since 2019, making fake fraud warnings from major banks the most prevalent scam.
According to the FTC's data, consumers reported losing $330 million to these fake bank warnings in 2022, which is more than double what was lost in 2021. The median amount lost was $3,000.
Although bogus bank warnings were the most common text message scam, there were other types of texting scams that were also successful in duping unsuspecting individuals of their money. Texts offering "little gifts," fake package delivery problems, phony job offers, and fake Amazon security alerts rounded out the top five.
