VANUATU BANKS
This page provides some information about Vanuatu's registered domestic and international banks.
A. Vanuatu Domestic Banks
The domestic banking system in Vanuatu consists of two foreign owned banks and two locally owned banks. These banks are subject to the supervision of the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu.
The following are domestic banks operating in Vanuatu:
1. ANZ Bank (Vanuatu) Limited.
A wholly owned subsidiary of the ANZ Banking Group that is domiciled in Australia. ANZ Bank (Vanuatu) Limited offers a full range of retail and commercial banking services with offices in Vila and Santo. Shares in the ANZ Banking Group are widely held and the company is listed on the Australia Stock Exchange.
2. Westpac Banking Corporation.
The Vanuatu branch of Westpac Banking Corporation that is domiciled in Australia. The branch offers a full range of retail and commercial banking services with offices in Vila and Santo. Shares in the Westpac Banking Corporation are widely held and the company is listed on the Australia Stock Exchange.
3. National Bank of Vanuatu.
The Government of Vanuatu holds all of the issued capital of the National Bank of Vanuatu. The National Bank of Vanuatu offers a full range of retail and commercial services and has 19 offices throughout the islands of Vanuatu. It plays an important part in the economy, particularly in the under developed regions.
4. European Bank Limited. European Bank Limited is a privately owned bank that does not offer a full range of retail services. It operates as a private bank dealing with high net worth individuals and companies. European Bank is a wholly owned subsidiary of European Capital Holding Corporation, which is registered in Delaware U.S.A.
5. BRED (Vanuatu) Limited.
BRED Vanuatu Limited is a newly established domestic bank licensed to carry on domestic banking business under the Financial Institutions Act No. 2 of 1999. BRED (Vanuatu) Limited is a subsidiary of French bank “BRED Banque Populaire”. BRED Bank Populaire has operations in Europe and in Asia Pacific.
6. Credit Corporation (Vanuatu) Ltd Credit Corporation (Vanuatu) Limited is a new Credit Institution established to operate under the Financial Institutions Act No: 2 of 1999. The parent company of the institution, Credit Corporation (PNG) Limited was incorporated in PNG in 1978 and is domicile in PNG. Since establishment the Parent Company has expanded and is now the largest nationally owned finance and investment house in PNG. It is also a listed company on Port Moresby Stock Exchange. The company operates in PNG mainly in the areas of finance, banking, commercial and residential property ownership, property management and also established subsidiary finance companies in Fiji and the Solomon Islands. The
company also owns 10% of equity of Bank South Pacific making it the major shareholder.
B. Vanuatu International Banks
The following are authorized international banks registered in Vanuatu and are subject to the supervision of the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu under the International Banking Act No.4 of 2002.
