The city government of Manila on Monday took over the Grand Boulevard Hotel along Roxas Boulevard for non-payment of taxes for the last 10 years.
City legal officer Renato dela Cruz said the hotel formerly known as Silahis International has around P300 million in unpaid taxes.
Dela Cruz added that the hotel has been operating without a business permit and license to operate.
The city's legal department said they are puzzled at why past administrations have failed to check on the hotel's unpaid taxes.
Hotel management, meanwhile, was given until March 2009 to settle its unpaid taxes.
City hall officials said that hotel ownership will be transferred to the local government if management fails to settle the amount.
Meanwhile, the Office of the City Mayor said that it is monitoring around 100 business establishments that have been delinquent in paying taxes.
Ric de Guzman of the mayor's office said that failure of these businesses to pay taxes would mean lesser money for programs and projects for the city's residents.
